About The Office of Wellbeing
The City of Santa Monica’s Office of Wellbeing uses data to give citizens and policy-makers a better understanding of what makes a city thrive- and how to use that understanding to make Santa Monica a better place to live, work and play for its 90,000 residents and 160,000 daily visitors. through its innovative tool, the Wellbeing Index.
About the Fellowship
The Wellbeing Project team is seeking a Designmatters Fellow to develop communication strategies and tools targeted at residents to encourage deeper understanding and engagement with the Wellbeing Project and the project’s six dimensions: Community, Place, Learning, Health, Economic Opportunity and Outlook. Situated in the City Manager’s office in Santa Monica City Hall, the Office of Civic Wellbeing will provide the Fellow with a real-world context to develop understanding of the communication tools needed in the public sector, the role of design in effective community engagement, designing for public policy, and social impact. As part of the engagement, the Fellow will engage with residents to conceptualize & design communication strategies and tools to communicate the vision of the Pico Wellbeing Plan, a multi-layered planning effort to co-create solutions to community challenges with residents of the city’s neighborhood with the lowest rates of wellbeing across all dimensions.
The Designmatters Fellow will receive:
• An $11,000 Stipend
• Up to 6 Units of Academic Credit
• Professional Development and Mentorship
• The opportunity to apply your talent and education on a cutting-edge public sector team
Who Can Apply?
Graphic Design and Interaction Design students in their 5th Term and above and graduate-level students from across all disciplines, including students graduating this term, are encouraged to apply. This is a full time placement for 14 weeks from May to August 2018. Exact start and end dates are negotiable.
Ideal Fellow Skills and Experience:
• Understanding of design research and strategy
• Fluency in visual design and user experience design
• A self-starter and entrepreneurial problem-solver
• Ability to work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team
• Interest in community engagement
