The Denhart Family Sustainability Scholarship Prize supports ArtCenter’s developing curriculum in comprehensive design and will foster in students, faculty and staff recognition of environmental responsibility and a commitment to social good.

Several of this year’s winning projects were designed by Designmatters Minor students or outcomes of a Designmatters transdisciplinary design studio (TDS) course.

1st Prize $15,000 / Shared between Yanhui Ban, Jamie Jooyoung Lee, and Jihae Lee, who together with Shef Herris created Airo, a smart and multi-functional air purification product/service system that removes harmful pollutants and facilitates maintenance using an innovative fiber-based and zero plastic air filter system. (This project was part of “Life Without Plastic” – Newell Brands Sponsored Project Spring 2020)

2nd Prize $10,000 / Shared between Weixin Huang and Veilinda Rusli for The Healing Garden. In collaboration with Coaniquem Foundation in Chile, the student designers created a sensory and therapeutic experience and healing outdoor space for children undergoing treatment at the burn clinic. (This project was part of our Summer and Fall 2019  Safe Niños studios).

2nd Prize $10,000 / Vivian Chen, who together with Yuning Tang, Connie Zhou and Michael Zhu created Reimagine EXPO, a rigorous re-design and branding solution for an iconic whiteboard marker brand that introduces material circularity and an improved experience for creative professional, collaborators, and remote learners and workers. (This project was part of “Life Without Plastic” – Newell Brands Sponsored Project Spring 2020).

2nd Prize $10,000 / Yanqi Li for Dropian, a speculative project to educate and inspire people to think about their water usage and change their behavior in a severely water-limited future world.

3rd Price $5,000 / Weizi Song for Grounded, a family of architectural tiles, inspired by rammed earth construction and natural forms, which sources its materials, and achieves its aesthetic, from locally available materials.

3rd Price $5,000 / Cosme Cruz for Healing Buddies, a holistic healing experience and burn therapy doll for children undergoing treatment at Coaniquem burn clinics in Chile. The ‘Buddy’ incorporates re-purposed fabrics from Coaniquem thrift shops and employs local craftspeople. (This project was part of our Summer and Fall 2019  Safe Niños studios).
