Designmatters’ Safe Agua Peru projects GiraDora and Balde a Balde were awarded gold prizes at the 2012 IDSA, International Design Excellence Awards. Out of 660 finalist, only 35 were awarded gold and ArtCenter topped this year’s list of college wins with eight awards!
GiraDora designed by Alex Cabunoc and Ji A You, is a human-powered washer and spin dryer, that increases the efficiency and improves the experience of hand-washing clothes for women living without access to running water.
Balde a Balde (Spanish for “Bucket to Bucket”) designed by Kimberly Chow, is a portable faucet that delivers a flow of water from any container. It makes the convenience and health benefits of running water available to the 46% of the global population living without it.
Three other Safe Agua Peru projects were also finalists in this year’s competition; Caja del Tesoro by Viirj Kan & Seth Weissman, Soap Buddy by Carlos Vides and Clean + Smart by Mariana Prieto & Alexandra Yee.
The IDSA/IDEA awards are a celebration of design excellence in products, sustainability, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts.
