The Creative Economy in California

Garret Scullin, Senior Coordinator, Designmatters August 20, 2018

Earlier this summer I attended the launch of the 2018 Otis Report on the Creative Economy, which examines twelve creative industries in Los Angeles and California and looks at their beneficial impact on the overall economy.

While the report is not specifically about social innovation in California, the focus of the keynote, given by Shawn Johnson, VP of Experience Design & Innovation at NBCUniversal, interprets the trends through that lens. Johnson’s view aligns closely with the mission of Designmatters, emphasizing that diverse, inclusive thinking, human-centered design and designing with empathy should be considered in all aspects of art and design as well as the larger creative economy.

I encourage students, faculty, and administration to have a look at the job trends covered in the report and consider how these will impact the world’s pressing issues.
